Your Fred’s Pharmacy is aware of Medicare’s new prescription drug coverage (Medicare Part D) has begun enrollment for 2008.  We have prepared this documentation to assist you with your questions about Medicare Part D and how you may be able to obtain additional help on your prescription drug costs.


Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D is available to anyone who is eligible for Medicare.  Most individuals become eligible when they reach age 65.  Others become eligible if they are totally and permanently disabled.  To learn more about eligibility requirements, call Medicare (1-800-MEDICARE or 1-800-633-4227).  You can also visit www.medicare.gov to obtain additional information.

 

If you are eligible for Medicare Part D, you will have the chance to enroll from November 15, 2007 to December, 31, 2007.  You will have many programs to choose from that could possibly be different in monthly premium, drug coverage, and contracted pharmacies.  To learn more about any part of Medicare’s prescription drug coverage, call Medicare (1-800-MEDICARE or 1-800-633-4227).  You can also visit www.medicare.gov to obtain additional information.

 

How to Get Extra Help on Your Prescription Drug Costs

If you have limited income and resources, you may be able to get extra help on your prescription costs and premiums.  Your Fred’s Pharmacy is available to assist you in completing your application for extra help.  After submission, you will be notified if you qualify for extra help by Social Security.  You can also contact Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or visit www.socialsecurity.gov for additional information.

Since January 1, 2006, Medicare has offered coverage for prescription drugs.  If you are eligible for Medicare, you can enroll in a Medicare Part D program.

Who is eligible to enroll with Medicare Part D?

Who administers the Medicare Part D program?

If you are eligible for Medicare Part D, you will have the chance to enroll from November 15, 2007 to December, 31, 2007.  You will have many prescription drug plans to choose from that could possibly be different in monthly premium, drug coverage, and contracted pharmacies.   

Are individuals that have Medicare and Medicaid eligible to enroll with Medicare Part D?

All individuals that have Medicare and Medicaid, “dual eligible”, will be automatically enrolled in a prescription drug plan.  These individuals will have the ability to change their Medicare prescription drug plan.

Do you have to enroll in the Medicare Part D program by December 31, 2007?

No.  Enrollment in Medicare Part D is voluntary.  However once the enrollment period has passed; you will not be able to enroll until the next enrollment period, and you will incur a lifetime monthly penalty for late enrollment.  If you have already enrolled and do not want to change plans, you do not have to do anything to continue coverage with your current plan.

What is the cost to participate in the Medicare Part D program?

There will be a number of Medicare Part D prescription drug plans that will be available to you.  The premiums could vary by each prescription drug plan, however Medicare estimates that the average monthly premium will be approximately $24 per month.

What prescriptions are covered?

Each prescription drug plan will have a formulary.  The formulary may vary from prescription drug plan to prescription drug plan.  You should compare the formularies with the prescriptions you are currently taking when choosing a prescription drug plan.

What pharmacies serve Medicare Part D patients?

Each prescription drug plan has contracted with pharmacies to serve you.  The contracted pharmacies may vary from prescription drug plan to prescription drug plan.  You should make sure that your local pharmacy participates within the prescription drug plan you enroll.

Is there any prescription drug cost assistance?
